Reese shot just 6-of-17 from the field but still scored 20 points, thanks in large part to making 8-of-10 from the free throw line.
She added 11 rebounds and was one of four Tiger starters to score in double figures, led by Flau’Jae Johnson’s 21 points.
When she was taken out of the game with 1:55 left and LSU holding a commanding 28-point lead, Reese shared a warm hug with head coach Kim Mulkey.

“The 3rd best player on her team”: Appreciate Angel Reese’s offensive struggles in “UGLY” First Round victory that drew backlash from college hoops fans… Shocked Angel Resse! (+Pictures)
Angel Reese and the LSU Tigers women’s basketball team survive another day in the NCAA Tournament.
This victory comes after the team lost the 2024 SEC championship game to South Carolina with a 79-72 final score.
Throughout this season, Reese has been a key asset on Kim Mulkey’s offensive arsenal on the court.
But during their First-Round game against the Rice Owls, Angel Reese who has a $1.8 million valuation (as per On3), struggled to put up the offensive performance that she is known for.
The defending national champions may be off to a successful start in this year’s NCAA Tournament, but Reese will have to find her rhythm and continue scoring points in abundance once again Following the victory against Rice, fans took to social media to share their opinions on the 21-year-old’s performance.
One fan even went on to comment:
“Angel Reese is the 3rd best player on her team. She can rebound her a** off but shawty aint like that.”

Here are a few more reactions to the Bayou Barbie’s First Round game in the NCAA Tournament.
If I’m a WNBA GM right now, Angel Reese just fell out of the 1st draft for me watching this game. Angel is a role player meaning she can’t do it all. She excels with posting up strong, using her quickness & strongly rebounding the basketball.
Stop trying to prove versatility.

The
#LSU Womens Basketball sucked 2day. they should have easily won by double digits but didnt. If it wasn't for the free throws, they would have lost. Angel Reese makes me think she didnt want 2 b there. There're 2 many turnovers for a team hyped as much as they are. Terrible— 𝓢𝓽𝓪𝓷𝓵𝓮𝔂 𝓝𝓸𝔀𝓪𝓬𝓴𝓲 (@Stanches2329) March 22, 2024
Angel Reese went 1-7 but she made it look so good. She brought so much energy to her team in that game. With the attention they put on her if her teammates go crazy they can easily repeat!
